Betty Louise Murphy
Betty Louise Murphy, beloved mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2025, at the age of 84.
Born in Blanket, Texas, to Robert and Odell Kirksey, Betty grew up in Turkey Peak near Brownwood. She attended Early Public Schools and went on to earn a degree in English and French from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, graduating on a full scholarship. A passionate educator, she devoted over three decades to teaching, beginning with English at Levelland High School and Moody High School, and later Physical Education at Meadows Elementary in Fort Hood, Texas for 34 years.
In 1967, Betty married the love of her life, Joe T. Murphy of Rogers, Texas. Together, they built a home in Temple, Texas, where they raised their two children, Patrick and Shannon. They remained in the same home for 47 years, creating a foundation of love and lasting memories.
After Joe's passing in 1994, Betty embraced life with a spirit of adventure and curiosity. She traveled extensively, ultimately visiting 49 states, 67 countries, and all seven continents—an achievement that reflected her lifelong love of learning and exploration.
In 2007, she proudly welcomed her granddaughter, Maya Murphy Hernandez, whose presence brought great joy to her later years. In 2012, Betty moved to Sun City, where she enjoyed bird watching, playing cards, reading, and sharing time with her many dear friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Murphy; her parents, Robert and Odell Kirksey; and her siblings, Dale, Jim, and Ruthey.
She is lovingly survived by her son Patrick and his wife Gina Murphy of Denver, Colorado; her daughter Shannon Murphy of Georgetown, Texas; and her cherished granddaughter, Maya Hernandez, age 17.
Betty will be remembered for her unwavering strength, kindness, adventurous spirit, and deep love for her family and friends. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched through her teaching and her joyful, generous presence.
A Celebration of Life to honor her will be held at The Oaks Room, Sun City (301 Del Webb Blvd, Georgetown, Texas) on
