Don Mercer

In Loving Memory of Don Henry Mercer January 12, 1937 – August 12, 2025

Don Henry Mercer of Georgetown, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at the age of 88.

Born in Lockney, Texas, Don spent his early years on a modest farm in the Texas Panhandle, where he lived a rustic life alongside his sister Glenna and his parents, Florence Faye McCarty, JV “Mac” McCarty, and Earl Stanton Mercer. Without indoor plumbing or a refrigerator, the family embraced the simplicity of country living until relocating to Phillips, Texas, in the fall of 1942.

Don graduated from Phillips High School (Blackhawks) in 1955, where he also worked at the town grocery store as a teenager. Following high school, he proudly served in the Naval Reserves for eight years, receiving an honorable discharge in September 1962.

He dedicated 36 years of his professional life to Phillips Petroleum, retiring in 1993. Don was known for his strong work ethic and quiet integrity.

A lover of the outdoors, Don found joy in cruising, camping, gardening, and carpentry. He cherished trips to Ruidoso Downs, traveling, and spending time with his family. After moving to Sun City, Texas, he embraced community life—playing bridge, cruising in his golf cart, and attending neighborhood block parties. Summers were often spent in Ohio with his son Gary, Lynn, and his beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Mercer (1996); his mother, Florence Faye “Nana” McCarty (2013); his stepfather, JV “Mac” McCarty (2001); his father, Earl “Big Daddy” Mercer (1992); and his sister, Glenna Gray (2022).

He is survived by his children:

  • Gary Mercer and girlfriend Lynn Schultz
    • Cherished fur kid: Stella
    • Granddaughters: Nicole Perry and husband Brandon Perry
    • and Natalie Synder and husband Ricky Synder
    • Great-grandchildren: Keagan Perry, Dylan Perry, Cameron Perry, and Hudson Synder
  • Brenda Mercer and wife Deidre Claunch
    • Along with their cherished fur kids: Bailey and Harley Jo

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Atlus Hospice Care for their compassion and support during Don’s final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Don’s honor to Harley’s Angels Sanctuary, a cause close to the family’s heart.

A celebration of Don’s life will be held at a later date.
