Herbert Jake Hanson
Herbert Jake Hanson, Jr., 92, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a life defined by resilience, humor, and a deep love for people.
Born August 27, 1933, in Elgin, Texas during the Great Depression, Herb overcame a difficult start in life to become a proud U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War. After recovering from a serious service-related injury, he attended Sam Houston State University on the GI Bill. In 1960, he married the love of his life, Renée, and together they built a life centered on family, community, and service to others.
Herb spent nearly 40 years at KTBC-TV in Austin, where he became known for his ability to connect people and help businesses grow.
A longtime resident of Georgetown, Herb was devoted to his family and took great pride in his children and grandchildren. He was thrilled to participate in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2023, an all‑expenses paid program that honors veterans by flying them to see the memorials dedicated to their service.
Herb never met a stranger and is remembered for his warmth, humor, and the way he made everyone feel welcome. He loved gardening, and his vegetables were widely shared and appeared on the menu at Monument Café.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Renée; his oldest son Jake, wife Kim, and grandsons, Kelly, Cole, and Chase; his youngest son Kevin, wife Laura Ann, and grandson Sterling; his sister, Barbara Janette Thomas; and extended family.
A memorial service will be held at St. Helen's Catholic Church on Monday April 20th. A Rosary will be conducted at 9:15 am with a Mass to follow at 10 am. A graveside service will then be conducted at IOOF Cemetery, with a reception at St. Helen's fellowship hall. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Tunnel to Towers at https://t2t.org.
