Daniel Stewart “Dan” Dunagan, 81, was born in Bowie County, Texas, on September 5,

1944, to Gerald Houston Dunagan and Margaret Ellen Stewart Dunagan. Dan passed away

peacefully in Round Rock, Texas, on Thursday morning, January 8, 2026. His parents preceded

him in death. 

Dan always considered San Angelo to be his hometown, graduating from San Angelo

Central High School in 1962 and going on to attend San Angelo College. He also attended Sul

Ross State Teachers College in Alpine, as well as Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dan loved ranching, cars, and was gregarious and outgoing and made friends wherever he

went. His sense of humor was unmatched. 

On October 4, 1997, Dan married the love of his life, Carolyn Barker Powell, in Hewitt,

Texas. Dan is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his daughter Wendi Dawn Dunagan Wilde (B.J.)

and children Sloan and Konner; his daughter Danette Dunagan Buntyn (Manley) and daughter

Caleigh; and daughter Jordyn Danielle Lockhart Ford and her family, as well as stepchildren, Jody Powell (Jalynn), James Powell (Kara), Joshua Powell (Mery), and Travis Powell (Julia). Dan was so proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Further surviving are Dan’s sister Gerry and brother-in-law Jim Johnson. 

Dan was preceded in death by his faithful Scottie dog, Odie, and is survived by his

precious Yorkshire terrier, Ysa. The family wishes to thank Dan’s caregivers and friends at Bel

Air Teravista, including Gracie, Jeanette, Debbie, Mindi, Tina, Trisha and many others. The

family also thanks Resolutions Hospice for their kind and loving support. 

There will be a Celebration of Life for Dan at a later date.  Those wishing to give a gift to honor Dan’s memory may do so by making a donation to their local SPCA shelter or to the charity of their choice.
