Dr. Joseph Ralph Helton, Jr.

Dr. Joseph Ralph Helton, Jr. “Joe”, 83, of Rockwall, Texas, passed away on March 5, 2026.

Joe was born in Dallas, Texas, to Joseph Ralph Helton and Lois Virginia Lee. He pursued a 

lifelong passion for learning and education, earning a Doctorate in Education. He achieved 

his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at East Texas State University and his doctorate at 

Oklahoma State University. He later dedicated his career as a tenured professor at East 

Texas State University. Through his years in academia, Joe influenced and mentored 

countless students, leaving a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of learning 

from him.

A proud veteran, Joe served in the United States Marine Corps and was recognized as a 

Sharpshooter Expert. He carried the values of discipline, service, and integrity throughout 

his life. He was also an active member of several organizations, including the Sigma Chi 

Fraternity, the Shriners, and the Masons, where he formed lasting friendships and 

contributed to his community.

Joe is survived by his loving daughters, Kathryn Villalobos and Diane Trent, along with their 

respective spouses, Eusebio Villalobos, Jr. and Robert Trent. He was a proud grandfather to 

Raylea Sellars, Victoria Villalobos, Lucas Villalobos, Hayden Trent, and Grant Trent, all of 

who brought him great joy. He is also survived by his sister, Lois Hogan; his brother, Jack 

Helton; and five nephews.

Joe will be remembered for his intellect, dedication to education, and commitment to 

service. His legacy lives on through his family, his students, and all who knew him.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be held on May 22, 2026 at 11a.m. at Lakepoint Church, 

Rockwall, Texas.
