James (Jim) Edward Kollar Sr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather and teacher, passed away at home in Leander, Texas, on June 18, 2025, at age 81. Born April 16, 1944, in El Paso, Texas, he was the eldest of three sons of Edward and Emma Kollar.

A graduate of Ysleta High School, Jim earned his degree from the University of Texas at El Paso. On May 27, 1967, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth (Betty) Flores. Together they raised four sons with love, perseverance and humor.

Early in his career, Jim worked in auto parts, security, lawn care and as a substitute teacher. He especially enjoyed working with vocational students at Riverside High School, often restoring and selling cars they repaired.

After earning his degree in 1984, he taught history at Tejas School of Choice in Ysleta ISD — earning Teacher of the Year in 1996–97 — and later at Americas High School in Socorro ISD until retiring in 2009.

After moving to the Austin area, Jim stayed busy gardening, traveling and creating elaborate Christmas displays that brought joy to his community.

Jim is survived by Betty, his wife of 58 years; sons James Jr. (Monique), Andy (Gina), Billy, and Benjamin; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers; and many others whose lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, honor Jim by donating to the American Diabetes Association—or by fixing something with your own hands or lending a helping hand.
